San Juan County is home to some of the most beautiful natural architecture in the world, too much to see in one day. If you’re tired of being out in the sun all day and need a change of pace, you should take time to learn more about the historical significance of this corner of Utah. 


The museums
here hold modern stories of the Mormon Pioneers who built this modern community, but it also delves into the distant past—covering everything from Anasazi ruins to dinosaur fossils. The history here is as diverse as the rock formations close by, so plan some of these museums into your itinerary.

Edge of the Cedars Museum

Address: 660 W 400 N, Blanding, UT

This gorgeous museum is dedicated to the preservation of native American artifacts. You’ll learn about the Anasazi people and see what techniques they used to live their everyday lives. Stunning artwork lines the walls giving a look at the Native American perspective. You can even step down a ladder and stand in a pueblo! 


If you want to gain appreciation for a foreign culture, then this museum is a must-visit location!

Bluff fort

A fully-fledged 1800s-style village that will transport you back to a Pioneer lifestyle! The Mormon Pioneers settled this area in the late 1800s, well after the members of the church had settled northern Utah. Gain an understanding of their experiences and challenges the Saints faced in the unforgiving San Juan area. With 25 buildings to explore (that include museum exhibits and stories), you can be here for a while if you so choose!

This is less of a historical museum and more of an educational one! It’s great for young kids who are discovering the world around them. There are physics experiments, natural exhibits and much more. Maybe not a reason to go to Monticello on its own, but can be fun as a pit stop!

THE DINOSAUR MUSEUM

Utah is renowned for its well-preserved fossils. Plenty of dinosaur bones and other souvenirs from the past have appeared in our area, and you can learn more about them and see them in person at our local museum! You’ll find several fascinating exhibits depicting different kinds of dinosaurs, merchandise from our sensationalization of the creatures, and much more.


This is a favorite among children–particularly young boys. If you have some youngins that love dinos, bring them here for an afternoon! You’ll be their favorite parent (or grandparent).

Are you trying to fill in your state’s visited map, and want an easy way to check off four of them? Come to the Four Corners monument—the only place that you can be in four states at one time.

When you arrive at the monument, you’ll see vendors at all four corners, selling souvenirs from all the different states! While maybe not the most thrilling attraction, it’s the only place you can actually do this in the entire country, so you might as well visit it for that alone!
